Buckingham knew his friends were just teasing him, so he started singing and skipping as well. But he did turn his head and look back at Old Man Iguana sitting by himself on the top of the rocks.
Later that same evening at dinner, Buckingham asked his parents about Old Man Iguana.
“Mom, Dad,” he said. “Why doesn’t Old Man Iguana ever come to the Harvest Feast?”
“Well, Buckingham,” replied his father. “He just doesn’t. It seems to work out best that way. Iguanas are kind of different. They like to be left alone with their rocks.”
“How do you know that?” questioned Buckingham.
“It’s just the way it has always been,” his father answered.
“Well, has anyone ever asked him if he wants to come to the Harvest Feast?” continued Buckingham.
“Old Man Iguana is quite ancient. I’m sure sometime a long time ago someone asked him if he wanted to come and he let them know that he preferred to be alone. Besides – what would he bring for the soup? Rocks?” said his father.
“Buckingham, it is very nice of you to think of Old Man Iguana, but it is just the way things are. They have always been this way. Now it is time for you to get in bed. Tomorrow is the big day – the Harvest Feast,” said his mother.
